Grab a bottle of any vitamins or supplements you have in the house and take a look at the "Other Ingredients" or "Inactive Ingredients". Odds are you will see something called Magnesium Stearate. Over 90% ofthe vitamins and supplements made today contain magnesium stearate, but what is this ingredient and do you really want to take it? Let's find out…

Magnesium Stearate – Lubricant for Your Supplements

Magnesium Stearate is a combination of Magnesium Salt and Stearic Acid. Stearic acid is a fatty acid and it can come from an animal or vegetable source. In addition, stearic acid can be either hydrogenated or non-hydrogenated.

The reason you see magnesium stearate in the vast majority of supplements is because it acts as a lubricant for the encapsulating machines. Manufacturers want to run their encapsulating machines as fast as possible, to keep costs down, and magnesium stearate keeps things moving quickly.

Is Magnesium Stearate Safe to Take?

Depending on who you ask you will probably get one of these answers…

  • No
  • Yes
  • Maybe
  • Probably
  • We Don't Know

The FDA has said that magnesium stearate is safe. Various doctors, including Dr. Mercola, have shown studies that find that it is not safe. Numerous medical sites say the research is inconclusive.

Are There Any Health Benefits to Taking Magnesium Stearate?

To this question there is complete agreement – NO! There are no health benefits to taking magnesium stearate, at best it has no effect on your health. The only benefit is to supplement manufacturers who want to be able to encapsulate their supplements at a faster rate.

Can Supplements Be Made Without Magnesium Stearate?

Yes! We have found a few companies that make organic supplements without using magnesium stearate. Supplements like the Perfect Acai and Perfect Aquatic Greens are made without any magnesium stearate.

Why Would I Want to Take Magnesium Stearate?

You really wouldn't! If magnesium stearate does have some health risks, you clearly would not want to take it. But let's assume that magnesium stearate is safe –even so, why take an ingredient that has no health benefits?

Here at BOS we believe in "better safe than sorry". Since there are no benefits to magnesium stearate, and it could have some risks, the best organic supplements should NOT contain magnesium stearate.
