As we covered in our previous lesson, Spirulina has some very strong potential health benefits. We know that Spirulina has a very strong upside, now we need to determine if there is a downside to eating Spirulina

Does Spirulina Produce Any Harmful Side Effects?

First, a word from our lawyers…. You should always consult with your doctor before starting any supplement program. Nothing on this site should be taken as specific medical advice. We are not doctors and we can not give medical advice. I know this all sounds very legal, but it really makes sense to only take medical advice from your doctor, who knows your specific situation.

Generally speaking, Spirulina does not produce serious side effects. We have seen reports of some minor issues when using Spirulina, such as – upset stomach, diarrhea or nausea. These side effects look to be rare and generally go away as people build up a tolerance to Spirulina.

Women who are pregnant or nursing should always consult with their doctor before using any new supplements.

Some People Should NOT Take Spirulina

Our research has found that there are some people who should probably avoid Spirulina. People with a metabolic condition called phenylketonuria (PKU) should avoid taking spirulina. People with this rare condition cannot metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine. Spirulina is rich in all amino acids, including phenylalanine.

People with an autoimmune disease, such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus, should avoid spirulina as it could stimulate your immune system and make your condition worse.

Again, this is not meant to be complete medical advice, we just wanted to highlight some examples of where Spirulina could do more harm than good. However, for the vast majority of people, taking Spirulina will be a positive experience.

Spirulina = Safe
Spirulina + High Levels of Heavy Metals = NOT Safe

Pure Organic Spirulina looks to have very few side effects or risks. The problem is that some Spirulina is grown in water that is not pure and therefore the Spirulina has high levels of Heavy Metals and toxins. You definitely want to avoid Spirulina that is high in heavy metals.

Let's move on to our next lesson where we put Spirulina to the test and determine if it is
