Magnesium Stearate – Lubricant for Your Supplements
Magnesium Stearate is a combination of Magnesium Salt and Stearic Acid. Stearic acid is a fatty acid and it can come from an animal or vegetable source. In addition, stearic acid can be either hydrogenated or non-hydrogenated.
The reason you see magnesium stearate in the vast majority of supplements is because it acts as a lubricant for the encapsulating machines. Manufacturers want to run their encapsulating machines as fast as possible, to keep costs down, and magnesium stearate keeps things moving quickly.
